"Will my new internet appliance (i.e., may a wintel pc) be compatable with all these different platforms?"

Anyone who develops software for this platform will have it automatically work on any device, including appliances, cell phones, desktop PCs, etc. And like traditional platforms, this one provides essentials like user interface, authentication, security, language interoperability, centralized data, web services, XML exchange between any application or web service, etc. all integrated over the Internet.

The problem, IMHO, is that Microsoft's "vision" is limited to whatever they can copy from IBM, Oracle, Sun, etc. and manage to get out the door within a few months without more bugs than the public will tolerate.

JMHO, of course.
