It COULD have been good for this country. Unfortunately we have a short memory, which is why there are all of these monster SUV's on the road, depleting non-renewable resources.

But after that kickstart of conservation, we're right back to where we were in the early 70's. Per capita consumption of crude oil and it's products is unchanged from 1973.
