Gottfried, I think that would be useful, but the earlier in the food chain we can get the data, the closer it gets to becoming a leading indicator. That's why I think end-user demand is important, i.e., computer sales, cell-phone sales, etc.

Dram prices going up. The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy said the consistent increase is generally attributed to a shortage of supply and the trend should continue throughout the second half. MOCIE officials said the increase in DRAM prices means that the earlier projection for exports of $23.5 billion will be adjusted upwardly to $24.5 billion. ''The prices of the 64M units broke the $7 barrier last month and have been trading in the $8 range this month and further increases are expected as supply remains short,'' one ministry official said. Another favorable transition on the market for Korean semiconductor makers is that the bit cross, where the market standard multiplies from say 4M to 16M, is expected in the second half. Boosted by the high value of 64M chips, the 128M units were trading at $16 last week, up from the $14 of last month, the ministry official cited from statistics. Regarding the reason for the sharp increase in DRAM prices, the officials said the growth of the personal computer sector has been steady and that the development of Windows 2000 has been creating new demand. In addition, the explosive demand for devices in information and communication has resulted in an increasing need for memory devices and there is no indication the trend will change in the near future.
