Lotus Ireland says makes Web language breakthrough
DUBLIN (Reuters) - Lotus Ireland, a subsidiary of International Business Machines Corp., said on Wednesday it had developed a new software product allowing people speaking different languages to communicate across the Web.

The new system, called Lotus Translation Services for Sametime (LTSS), translates Web chat and communications as typed in real time, and will go on sale in September, Lotus Ireland said.

``We are delighted that Dublin was at the forefront of something which has major implications for the development of the World Wide Web,'' Mark Wallace, head of the development team, said in a statement.

The Sametime product would open up the Internet as a truly global, multilingual vehicle for the first time, he added.

The software employs Java technologies, and the global target market includes businesses, government agencies, service providers, or any organisation with a dispersed workforce or a need to work with remote colleagues or partners, Lotus said.

The software was developed by a team of 10 people. Around half of Lotus' 500 Dublin-based personnel work on product development.

Lotus Development Corporation was set up in 1982 and markets its products in more than 80 countries worldwide.
