Good catch, Edwin. I've been thinking all along that this could be a great deal.

I think the NCB deal could be a good one. Japanese lending institutions are in need of a revolution. Aside from loan sharks, it is difficult for a venture or angel backed firm in Japan to get debt financing. There is poor due diligence (well, the founder's friend went to Todai so I guess we can approve the loan) at best.

A good case study is the US, where aside from Silicon Valley Bank there are a number of debt players for venture/angel-backed companies. City National Bank and Imperial Bank saw the success of SVB (NASD: SIVB) which rose on the value of the warrants it takes in its 9000+ clients. Full disclosure: they have a warrant on a company I cofounded and are a strategic partner. Take a look at the SIVB chart and you see how it takes off from the times of IPOs in companies like Silicon Graphics and Netscape.

Son knows the size of this opportunity based on his experience in the US market with startups. If Son can manage it, it will do well, IMO.

Hello, Edwin and all Fellow Threadmembers,

Our thread's been kind of quiet lately. Miss Jay... Miss Netconductor... Wonder how Michelda's doing? (And did Nihon-jin, who started our thread, ever return to post on it? Hope at least he lurks.)

Think tonight is kind of a turning point for us. We've the new split shares to trade for the first time, following a big down day on Nasdaq US, and Morningstar Japan's IPO on our new baby Nasdaq Japan!

(In anticipation of new shares trading, I earlier this week placed an order to purchase another 100 shares -- specifiying the purchase be made during the beginning of the Nikkei's June 23 trading session. Would you believe the broker called this morning to tell me the price I paid LAST NIGHT? I've since gone on record that if the earlier date purchase was to my disadvantage, I expect the brokerage to make me whole. One would think the foreign desk of a major house could figure out the time difference!)

Anyway, just wanted to say hello to all. Do think we'll in the long run be glad we discovered this opportunity early on. Not that I think Son & Softbank are infallible, but that they are damn well positioned in an exciting time! It may be a wild ride, but the direction will be UP. Too many of the right positions are established -- it will pay off, despite some mis-steps.

BTW, lately I've found the RB thread to be more lively and really informative. Time for us to reassert our leadership!

Good investing to all...

Becky B.
