would not open physical-presence retail stores? Not that your argument doesn't apply, but I

You are correct that Amazon has said that. Amazon also had said at one time, they would not need to carry much inventory. The beauty of the model was sell the product first and pay for it later. Amazon carried so much inventory last fall, they had a $40 million inventory markdown I believe.

This is uncharted territory so Amazon may change as necessary.
