Korea's Kospi rose 9.26 to 788.20. Samsung Electronics, the world's largest computer memory chipmaker, gained 2.4 percent to 358,500 won. Hyundai Electronics, the second-largest memory chipmaker, gained 2.9 percent to 22,800 won.

``Chipmakers like Samsung and Hyundai Electronics are getting a boost from their U.S. counterpart, Micron Technology's gain on Friday, despite the Nasdaq's decline'' -- a signal demand in the global chip market is still strong, said Park Si Jin, a strategist at Hanwha Securities Co.

The spot price for the industry-standard 64 Megabit DRAM chips rose 1.3 percent last Friday to $8.395. It has gained 31 percent in the past month.
