Nokia, Telson Electronics Form CDMA Development Partnership

Seoul, June 23 (Bloomberg) -- Nokia Oyj, the world's largest mobile phone maker, said it signed an agreement with Korea's Telson Electronics Co. to jointly develop and manufacture code division multiple access (CDMA) products in the world's largest market for the technology.

Nokia said it will supply design specifications and have Telson manufacture phones to its standards ``to give us the impetus to provide the Korean market with the most competitive and localized CDMA products in the fastest and most effective way,'' Nigel Litchfield, Nokia Mobile Phones Asia-Pacific's senior vice- president, said in a statement.

For Nokia, which first established a mobile phone manufacturer, Nokia TMC Co. in Korea 1984 as well as CDMA R&D facilities in Seoul, the agreement could help it gain greater access to the Korean market. Korea has 27 million phone users out of the 60 million worldwide who use phones based on CDMA technology licensed from Qualcomm Inc. in the U.S.

Nokia is the main producer of the more widely used global system for mobile communication (GSM), which dominates throughout Europe and most of Asia but is not used in Korea.

Telson Electronics fell to 11,600 won today after surging by the daily 12 percent limit to 12,650 won yesterday when Maeil Business Newspaper reported it was close to signing a contract.
