Ericsson snagged the largest share of the wireless technology contracts in 1999, according to a newly released study by Cahners In-Stat. Ericsson commandeered nearly 25 percent of the $28 billion in contracts awarded last year. Nortel Networks and Lucent came in next, with 22.2 percent and 22 percent shares, respectively. Nokia and Motorola filled the fourth- and fifth-place slots.

But even though Ericsson held on to its top slot, it also lost the most market share ? a whopping 10 percent since last year -- according to the report. Nokia lost 7 percent.

Ericsson has a better handle on the wireless infrastructure market than handsets: It fell behind both Nokia and Motorola in worldwide mobile phone market share, after holding the top spot in 1996 and 1997.

The report, entitled Ericsson, Lucent & Nokia Go Down To The Wire - 1999 Wireless Awards Summary is available online for $3,495. <<
