Gordon,
There are, of course, a number of cults that I fear myself but, I am not sure about a government being the ones to decide which are dangerous, and which are not. Under an administration like we have had for over 7 years, they could have determined that any group, that didn't agree with them,
would be branded as "dangerous". Something like France is proposing must have some very strict checks, and balances, to be fair, and non-political in nature. I don't think very highly of the French anyway. American troops have bailed their butts out in two world wars, and in French Indo-China, but American tourists are spit on by these ingrates.

Just a week ago, representatives of largely American religious groups bought a full-page advertisement in the International Herald Tribune newspaper urging the government to back away from the proposed law.
My biggest beef with the mainstream american religions is that they will support any group no matter now weird as long as they say they are acting in the name of Jesus. Their lack of perspective is why the wall of separation between church and state needs to remain in place at it's strongest levels. It may look innocuous if the First Prespriteran's want city funds for a homeless shelter, but as soon as they get it a flood of con artists looking for tax free handouts arrives on the scene.
