NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Nokia Corp. (NOK) executives are meeting with Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) officials about the future use of Qualcomm's CDMA-wireless technology chipsets, an analyst said Friday.

The talks, which have not been confirmed by the companies, could represent a radical shift in Nokia's stance toward using Qualcomm's chips. Nokia has long maintained it will use only its own CDMA chipsets in wireless phones.

Pete Peterson, telecommunications analyst with Prudential Securities, said "we have confirmation that Nokia executives are at Qualcomm's headquarters in San Diego."

Additionally, Peterson said his contacts within Nokia said an agreement the company announced Friday with Korean phone maker Telson Electronics Co. will lead to the indirect supply of Qualcomm's chips into Nokia-designed phones.

"Nokia has positioned themselves in a way that they can claim they are not using Qualcomm chipsets," he said. "Nokia has said all along that they won't use anyone's chipsets but their own. Now, it looks like they have an indirect deal."

Nokia's usage of Qualcomm chipsets would be a huge win for Qualcomm due to the sheer branding power of Nokia, the world's largest handset maker.

"There's no doubt there's high customer affinity for Nokia products," Peterson said.

He noted that Nokia has tremendous power in pushing usage of CDMA technology, but its own CDMA chipsets are seen as less efficient than Qualcomm's.

"We strongly believe both in features and technology, Qualcomm's chipset is far superior to anyone else's," Peterson said.

Neither Qualcomm nor Nokia officials could be immediately reached for comment.

Greg- Funny thing that you should say you bought QCOM in the 60's. Weren't you totally trashing the stock a few days ago? You really play it both ways!

OK Greg, you're in the Q perfect timers club. Nice move.

But, uh, what about all those doubts about QCOM's management and the future of the company for this year? You were very clear about that.

<H>

Your post from last week; but you now claim to have bought. What a guy:

The Market Never Lies
Short sighted? I see QCOM making string of failed and wrong Investments and false starts, Russia, Next Wave, G, China, holding on the hand set div. too long, it's too soon to say anything about netzero, but I have yet to see any of the FREE ISP make it. Plus where is the fruit MSFT/QCOM collaboration, I have seen next to nothing from it has if QCOM was pushed right out it and MSFT is in total control. What you are holding now is a company that has to wait 18 months or two years for the pay off, that is most likely going to be reduced as it is. On top of all that, management has finally come to the conclusion that they have to become more then a CDMA shop, they have to face reality that pure CDMA system design by QCOM will not grow as expected, they have to start addressing the needs of whole cellular industry, like management conclusion so should QCOM realize this. Don't get me wrong, I have greatest respect for Dr. J and company, they are fighting the good fight, and a lot that has happen was out of their control, but you can't just sit here and be in denial and expect this stock to regain it's former luster, unless the current story changes and frankly, I just don't see that happening. Do you?

What does this prove? Apparently that you are a world class trader. Nice move.
