AK-47 And Death Threats Win Bride's Hand

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - A Cambodian man who was denied his lover's hand in marriage
eventually won it after backing up his proposal with an AK-47 assault rifle and a bucket of gasoline.

After his lover's family refused his marriage request, 35-year-old Hout Sitha reacted by taking his
would-be bride Nha Thavy and her entire family as hostages, the Koh Santepheap newspaper
reported Friday.

Sitha held them at gunpoint for hours in the incident on Wednesday, threatening to shoot the family
and burn their house down if they did not give their blessing.

After police attempts to solve the dispute failed, members of Sitha's family interceded, resulting in an
agreement that Sitha could marry Thavy.

Despite a one-year public gun confiscation program, three decades of civil conflict has left Cambodia
awash with weapons that are frequently used to settle personal disputes.
