A couple of differences between choosing to upgrade software and the confiscation of private property by the King.

One, it's your decision if and when you upgrade your software and it's also your decision what company you will patronize. Just try and exercise this same freedom next April 15th and see if your better off being targeted by the IRS or receiving some junk mail offers from Microsoft.

Two, the issue of taxation without representation differs from upgrading your software in one key area: The newer software must meet the needs of the customer better than the old or it won't sell. Simply put, the customer IS represented by Microsoft's desire to supply desirable products. And this is the key, Microsoft's products sell well because they're desirable.
