Here it is!The announcement that IBM will be producing Alpha processors brings new hopes of the 64-bit processor reaching new heights in terms of clock-frequency. Though it's no slouch, the 21264 has fallen down on clock frequency as Compaq and Samsung/API continue to have problems ramping the chip. According to this Register article, those delays will prevent the introduction of 1 GHz EV68 chips until the end of this year. However, there is good news on the horizon. Compaq is anticipated to release its EV7 (21364) processor during the first quarter of 2001 at speeds of 1.1 GHz and beyond. While these frequences don't seem like much compared to Intel's Willamette and AMD's Mustang, it's important to remember that the 21264 and 21364 series offer substantial performance gains over x86 processors at similar clock-speeds, particularly in the case of floating-point performance, as indicated in our review. Compaq has also started sampling EV68 parts although clock speeds of both its and its partner Samsung have so far only reached a max of 940MHz. However, IBM, which is now fabbing Alpha microprocessors, as first revealed here in February last year, appears to be getting good clock speeds even from a 0.25 micron process technology. The introduction of IBM's copper technology has, it appears, caused other delays. EV7 technology is now slated to appear in Q1 2001 but will intro at over 1.1GHz, the sources said. EV8 is likely to appear in Q1 2002. Later that year we are likely to see 0.13 micron Alphas - intended to be Intel IA-64 killers. aceshardware.com
