Sounds to me like he is misinterpreting an early wrist cock as a quick pickup of the club. There's nothing wrong with an early set of the wrists, but he should maintain an extension of his arms during that early set.

John,

Its very hard to address this person problem, because I don't know what he is made of. Many people buy clubs every year only to discover that it does not fly like Tiger's or David's. I then buy these new clubs for a very nice price in the used bin.

My point is this, if your friend thinks he is improving, maybe he is. I know that when I make a change, or get instruction, it may not show on the surface for weeks...but I know that I am getting better.

As for your friend, he sounds like he is swinging hard. It is very hard to help a friend, esp if you are not a scratch golfer. I have one friend that has a decent swing, but it could be so much better with just one small change. He is the type of person that would rather not receive advice, so I do not tell him. It is painful because he will say things like I do not understand how you hit it far, or you were lucky to get over that tree. What I know is that it is not luck, and that I have a much deeper understanding of the swing and the principles of ball flight.

The best I can offer is so spend some time with him on the range and if you get the chance to help him then do so. Otherwise just accept his play and select course with no glass near. I almost did the same thing with a window in my second year of play, but a single 3-4 inch wide tree saved my butt. It was at least a $10,000 picture window.

I do have one drill you do at the range that seems to help people who either swing hard or use too much wrist at the start. Hit half swing shots from 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock. This will force him to limit the power, and may get a better swing range happening. He will see how you do it, and because the entire full swing is not used it is easy for a beginner to see the very clear movement this shot requires. I call this drill, "pretend you are Seve" because the purpose is to learn how far you have to hit a half swing to move the ball a certain distance. It is a swing you can save a lot of strokes on the course with if you fade or draw into the trees alot (gee I wonder why I would need this? lol).

I am adding this because I just remembered another drill that might help your buddy. One of my good friends was in a bad accident. He used to just pound the ball. After months of trying to relearn to swing he finally started to see my pro. My pro made him do a drill to stop the exact thing your friend is doing with his wrists. He made him cock his wrists fully before the backswing, then he would rotate his arms and shoulders and hit the ball. What this did was stop the bad motion with the "side wrist" cock and let him feel a good swing with a fully loaded and proper wrist break. Try to get him to swing with the 9 o'clock thumbs to the sky to 3 o'clock thumbs to the sky drill too. Pretty soon he will get the feel of it.

Also get him to see a different pro. My first pro was just terrible. He wanted me to be someone else. Get someone who can see what you could be and helps you get there. We are all not built like Faldo or Woods.

Best of luck and maybe someone else here has something better to offer.

First a drill: Place a 2X4 (pointing toward target, flat on the 4 inch side) behind your buddies club at address (prefer Irons for this drill but works with woods). Tell him to push the 2X4 as far back and as straight as he possibly can in the take away. This will get him extended from the get go.

Second: It sounds like the pro is either: a) not grounded in fundamentals or b) does not communicate well to your buddy. Either way he needs to find a new pro.
