Thomas,
I went to school about 90 miles south of Waco. We haven't stolen that Baylor bear in a long, long time. :^))

It's not that I am against he idea of tithing The Bible tells us we should, and every Christian, that I know, does his best to contribute as much as he can to his particular congregation. My objection is that no pastor, or church synod, should pressure individuals to do so. It is particularly bad, when a list is published of those who do tithe, which IMO, is a pressure move against those that haven't. ~H~

<<Basically, tithing (that is, a more or less mandatory contribution of ten percent of one's income) is referred to specifically only in the Old Testament, particularly in Deut 14:22. Malachi 3:8 is the most commonly cited supporting scripture, which to some minds implies that you are robbing God if you do not turn over your tenth to the Church.>>

In the days of Deut and Malachi the Church handled what is a large part of government today that grabs what? 30%.

Tom, I am a member of an Episcopal Church. We do pledge each year. However, no one knows what that pledge is. It is never opened and is burned when the new year comes. It is a pledge between the member and God. Our church puts absolutely no heat on anyone to contribute. However, I am on the Vestry and can confirm the monies are put to very good use. We assist those in need, in catastrophic situations, etc.. I have been tithing for about 5 years and can confirm that not only have I not missed the money I have actually prospered more than when I did not contribute.
Just my opinion and glad I am able to tithe. Frank
