Governor Bush holds strong and growing lead over AlGore the Junior:

Poll: Bush holds steady lead over Gore
June 26, 2000
Web posted at: 5:17 p.m. EDT (2117 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Texas Gov. George W. Bush continues to hold a steady lead over Vice President Al Gore in the latest CNN/USA Today/Gallup presidential preference poll, with strength among independent voters a key factor in Bush's support.

Bush, the likely Republican presidential nominee, leads Gore, the likely Democratic nominee, 52 percent to 39 percent among likely voters in a head-to-head match-up, according to the poll. When third party candidates are added, Bush leads 50 percent to 38 percent.

The poll is based on interviews with 1,020 adult Americans, including 560 likely voters, between June 23 and 25. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percent.

The new poll indicates Bush has strong and growing support among independents. The poll indicates Bush has the support of 54 percent of independent likely voters, compared to 29 percent for Gore. That is a strong jump over a poll conducted June 6 and 7, which gave Gore a 37-36 edge over Bush among independents....
