Intel CEO Plays Down Microsoft Split Impact

Pretty interesting words from Craig. As usual, he says them in his normal "Oh by the way" tone.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The head of U.S. semiconductor maker Intel Corp (NasdaqNM:INTC - news) said on Friday abroken-up Microsoft Corp (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) would work like the rest of the computer industry.

Software firm Microsoft, whose Windows operating system with Intel's microprocessors formed the ``Wintel'' platform that popularized the personal computer, is defending itself from a break-up in an anti-trust suit by the U.S. Justice Department.

``I don't think there will be a big impact on the computer industry if Microsoft is split up,'' Craig Barrett, president and chief executive officer of Intel, told a news conference during a tour of Europe.

``The horizontal breakup of Microsoft that has been proposed, that is an operating system company and an applications company, is relatively consistent with the horizontal structure of the computer industry.''

The Justice Department says Microsoft's vertical integration and bundling of its Windows operating system and application
programs stifles competition.

I've always wondered how AMD is actually ever going to meet this target. How much is Intel spending on new fabs and capital over the next few years? How much is AMD? How is AMD going to increase their market share beyond their current 15% (if it's even that high)?

AMD had 16.6% of the market in q4, and 17% in q1. This is with only one fab (Austin). Dresden roughly doubles capacity. We can argue about the effects of Intel's capacity expansion plans or of demand for AMD's products, but AMD will have the capacity to supply about 30% of the 32-bit x86 microprocessor market when Dresden is fully ramped (in 2001).
