Mag, A golf story, never give up. I don't know if anyone here has played a bet called the umbrella game? A team game with a number of bets on each hole. Closest to the pin in regulation, best score, best three combined scores (of the foursome). If a foursome wins all bets and the best score is a birdie or better, they get an Umbrella (affectionatly refered to as an Umby). Then, by some convoluted scoring method I haven't quite figured out yet, you win/lose about $38. It's a game that can lead to not casual (to me anyway) gains or losses, especially if there are more than two teams. Anyway, we had eight golfers this morning so we had the club computer pick the best matched teams and off we go. Our team, I thought, played lousy, only 4 birdies all day (two of them mine), on one par 5 the best score we could accomplish was 5, 7, 7. On the par 5 17th, three of us had birdie putts within eight feet, all 2 putted (grrr). Come the 18th, number 2 handicap, with OB left and right. Two guys hit straight down the middle, I hit OB, the other guy hit's OB. I reload, OB again, the other guy reloads, OB again. I finally get one in the fairway, the other guy goes OB a THIRD time. So I play it out for a nine, the other guys both get pars. We go into the clubhouse hanging our collective heads, figuring we are going to lose $150/$200 each because they will Umby us to death. The other team was about 25 minutes behind us (plenty of time to be miserable), it turns out they played equally lousy, and we even won the 18th by a stroke (their best scores were 5, 6, 7). Only won $10, but that seems real nice when you thought you lost $200. In addition, came in second in the quota game and tied for the sweeps in the pro shop game, walked away with about $60. Never give up, no matter how bad you think you are, the other guy may be worse. John
