"one week before an earnings warning, the CEO and others reassure the investment community that earnings are on track. Then, wham, the company announces a big miss. Again, what explanations are there for executives to grossly mislead the investment community and compromise themselves".

Could be they didn't know, could be that's why they are no longer on the job.

Gayle, this management team had never faced this type of adversity. Their handling of it, imo, simply shows a lack of experience in deal with an analyst and investment community that above all else, needs to trust management. Perhaps management felt this "news" was already priced into the stock in the 40-50 range. If so, a serious miscalculation.
