right, this is not sarc. it's a norton av email bulletin. i'll provide subscription info at the end of the pasted 'issue' content below in the event that you wish to receive the bulletins yourself... here is the excerpt about the 6/12 av defs causing probs:Subject: Norton AntiVirus SupportNow! News Bulletin Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 16:45:04 -0400 "1. Problems reported with 6/12/2000 definitions Symantec Technical Support and the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC), are investigating reports of a problem with the Norton AntiVirus (NAV) definitions dated 6/12/00 or 6/19/00. SARC, Support, and the NAV product groups are aggressively investigating these reports and are actively working on resolving the issues. The symptoms customers are seeing: - Computer stops responding while the machine is idle - The user must perform a hard reboot - ScanDisk runs on the restart, and creates very large numbers of files under the C:\DIR0001 folder. Commonalties: - Windows 9x OS/R2 - Norton AntiVirus versions 4.0x, 5.0x, or 7.0x, or NAV NLM 4.04 - The computer is on at 11:59:59 PM (this may also happen at random times) - MSGSRV32 may be active on the system At this time we have no reports of problems occurring on Windows NT or Windows NT Alpha systems. SARC has identified the problem with this definition set. They have released definitions dated 6/21/00, which we have confirmed do not create this problem. These definitions are now available through LiveUpdate and the Virus Definition Update Installer. Support and SARC recommend customers update to the 6/21/00 definitions to prevent any possible problems. 2.
