Sudan: Minister Announces New Oil Explorations, Power Generation BBC Monitoring Service, June 25 Text of report in English by Sudanese news agency Suna on 24th June Khartoum, 24th June: Minister of Energy and Mining Dr Awad Ahmad al-Jaz said that contacts are being conducted with international companies to sign agreements for oil exploration in northern, western, central and eastern Sudan, adding that some of these companies have expressed their desire to work at these areas. In press conference he held [on] Saturday at the Ministry of Energy And Mining, Dr al-Jaz said that the Sudanese oil process will go ahead towards reaching the stage of establishing petroleum industry in the country. He said that a number of oil establishments will be inaugurated during the celebrations marking the 11th anniversary of the National Salvation Revolution, explaining that the Central Oil Laboratory and the Oil Information Centre, besides the training centre will be inaugurated on Tuesday [27th June]. Khartoum Oil Refinery at Jayli area, north of Khartoum, will be inaugurated next Friday [30th June], he said. Dr al-Jaz said that the revenues of the exported Sudanese oil has direct positive impact on the public treasury, adding that exportation of oil was conducive to attracting investors and establishment of service projects and utilities at the oil production areas. He pointed out that the revenues of oil will be utilized to realize development in agriculture, mining, electricity and ports' projects in the country. Dr al-Jaz described the quality of the Sudanese crude [oil] as the best one in the world, a matter which led to competition among the international companies to purchase it. He said that his ministry plans to utilize gas for generating electricity power, adding that the ministry will shortly sign an agreement for generating 200 MW of electricity power by establishing a station near the oil refinery. On the environmental impact of the oil refinery, Dr al-Jaz said that there will be no tangible impact on the environment from the oil industry due to the good quality of the Sudanese oil. He said that units at the refinery were set up to ward off the negative impact of the oil on the environment. On desire of an American company to operate in Sudan, he said that Sudan welcomes investments from all counties, provided that they be committed to the Sudanese laws. Work is being made to expand Port-Sudan oil refinery and increasing its production capacity to 70 per cent, Dr l-Jaz said. He said that protocols had been concluded with a number of countries and companies operating in the oil field in the country for training Sudanese cadres, adding that a number of Sudanese cadres were sent for training sessions abroad.
