Sir Galahad,

<<As a part of Sun's recent NAS/SAN product announcement, they committed to support of all of the top brands of FC switches, including BRCD. This is the result of some pretty strong customer pressure, I am told.>>

Actually Sun puts this a little differently. Sun will certify other brands of equipment, but the switches they will OEM will be Ancor. The analogy they have used in public settings since their 6/14/00 announcement is tires on a car. They are setting up their systems and tuning their suspensions for Goodyear Eagle F1 GS tires. Other tires will fit on the rims but the performance will not be optimized for those tires.

Sun has said many times in the last year they have no plans to dual source. They will resell other switches if the customer specifically requests Brand X, but overall performance and feature set may be compromised.

I still maintain if Cisco is intent on subsuming the storage network market, they're interested in subsuming Brocade-switched networks and non-Brocade-switched networks. The more the better. Why be content with less than 100% subsumption?
