Zeev -

[...These are "Die costs and you can make an argument that testing costs will be higher, but my response will be that testing cost of any high data rate DRAM will be higher than the current generation systems. (that was a "oreemptive strike <VBG>).]

Earlie will be able to withstand, and welcome, all your attacks, especially if they merely consist of creme-filled chocolate sandwich cookies. -g-

Zeev:

"Pre-emptive strike",...... LOL!

I'll weakly respond to that sword thrust with a smelly red herring. That comment is exclusively for the use of Sir Alan, the esteemed head of the Fed. (g)

I noted the article yesterday, but thanks for the post.

Not to be a grump, but the article also noted that Nec "was reluctant to say how much of the savings would be passed on to the end user" and that Nec was "hoping to achieve 50% yields". Yields at this level (and obviously lower at the commencement of the program) might keep cost reduction at bay for a bit yet.

Still, your point is well taken and I am just having a bit of nit-picking fun with the above.

There is no question that the costs will come down. I just don't see many firms designing around the Rdram technology. In the end, it will be Intel's resolve or lack thereof that will provide the "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" on Rambus. (just saw Gladiator. great movie).

Best, Earlie
