Engineer. Ok. So there is virtually unlimited phone mfg cacaciy currently availabl in Korea--and if Telson, for some reason, doesn't have adequate idle capacity, then $100MM and? months would provide that capacity.

So, should we conclude that success in the phone business depends mainly on 1) buying an adequate supply of components cheap, and 2) marketing your phones in a superior way? Aparently NOK is doing a good job on both of these areas.

Eng - Dr Jacobs has said in the CCs earlier this year that the Q has a technology lead of about a year over any competing technology. If that is still true then we ought to see 2-G or even 3-G handsets and operating systems being deployed in the US, Japan, Australia and Korea before the end of the year.

If this happens then it seems to me that W-CDMA will be under the severest presure and may well face a credibility crisis. The other way round we still get the above markets but W-CDMA takes over the rest of the World. So what as long as they don't get the US and Japan remains a free market it doens't really matter if the rest of the World choses an inferior system and their populations and their economic growth suffer due to that. In fact it is really competitively good news for the US.

Best regards,

L

Re: CDMA 1800

Expanding on some of your points about the potential use of CDMA in 1800 MHz spectrum (Brazil, China, Turkey, Russia, Thailand, Philippines, et al. The new MSM5000 product spec sheet contains this language:

"The MSM5000 device is a digital baseband chip that enables manufacturers to meet or exceed the specifications of mobile stations for worldwide cdmaOne and 3G CDMA 1xMC systems, including IS-95A, IS-95B, IS-2000 and its variants for PCS in Japan, Korea and South America."

qualcomm.com

While this language is missing from the 3000 series data sheets is it possible to assume that this capability is available in 3000 series chips?
