Patrick,
Hi!!

RE:

DELL'S VENTURE CAPITAL GROUP STAYS FOCUSED
COMMENT: Dell's (DELL, $47) venture capital group is an aggressive and well-organized group. Dell's strategy is to sell PC's to everybody on the planet, so it invests in companies that help extend the PC platform. They focus exclusively on late-stage investments in technology companies whose products and services are complimentary to theirs. Unlike traditional Venture Capitalists which must raise money from investors, Dell has the luxury of having lots of cash, which allows them to make speedy decisions.
Once they put their money behind something they continue to work with the company on improving the business and finding new ways to leverage each other. In return for its money and distribution help, Dell often gains access into new markets.

The VC fund has invested some $800 million in startups (an average of $9 million per deal), easily more than most large VC funds. Dell is trying to follow Intel's lead. Intel has invested over $2 billion into new companies which has grown to nearly $10 billion. Dell's investments were worth about $2.7 billion at the end of its first fiscal quarter. That
number has come down, of course, with the weak market in the second quarter. All in all, when you buy a share of Dell, you are getting a slice of some serious VC money, run by folks who know the business cold..

Owning the relationship is taking on a new meaning huh? :o) We profit big time from their expertise and hunting abilities...

Best, KEmble

Patrick: TQ for the info on Dell ventures.
What is your source for $2.7B value for Dell venture investments?
You mean $800M grew to $2.7B? In what period of time?
