It seems that Edwarda's symptoms began shortly after she cleaned out an old house last fall.

I've been ruminating on this because I had a similar experience. Last summer I cleaned out a house that was filled with molds and years of dust. There were also a couple of decomposing birds in the basement. I'm not up on the subject, but I think bacterial mold is one of the worst things to encounter if you have a sensitive respiratory system.

A day or two after I finished cleaning, I woke up in the middle of the night shivering. I was very unsteady as I staggered around shutting off the air conditioner and looking for a blanket. For 2 or 3 days I had spaghetti for legs and felt very weak and feverish. I got better quickly, but didn't fully recover for at least 6 weeks. I was put on an asthma inhaler and given antibiotics. Thankfully, I haven't had to use the inhaler for some months now.

I can't help but think we may have had similar experiences. If one is exposed to deadly bacterial molds while their immune system is run down, the result may be what happened to poor Edwarda. I take anti-oxidant vitamins on a fairly regular basis. That may have been what pulled me through.
