Has anyone claimed that the technical development of the various memory characteristics in fact depended on Rambus's actual work?

If I had developed every Rambus claim 10 years before Rambus, hidden away all the results and later tried to patent them, it would be irrelevant whether I was awarded a patent or not, I would have still, in no way, have benefitted anyone by my work. Hopefully, the egregiousness of the Rambus situation will eventually help lead to patent reform. The original purpose of the patent system was to encourage the bringing of actual advances out into the useful light, where they may be employed and built upon. Unfortunately, the patent system has often become an end, rather than a means.
