Wow... what an eye opener... and from old Jorma himself! Thought this was interesting...

Now we have a catch-up game, which we will win. We have decided we will win and we will.

Well, as long as they've decided it, it's good enough for me. It's a good thing they didn't make the same decision to wipe CDMA out in favor of GSM... or maybe they did...?

Gotta love that "we started believing our own press releases" line...

That sounds like MOT 2 years ago when they were struggling to come out with their first CDMA Star Tac. They had just figured out that the 25 million analog customers in the US were going to be converted to digital CDMA customers.

Unfortunately for the wireless companies, their relationship is with the service provider, not the customer. This makes the technology investments by Verizon or Sprint PCS increasingly important as they upgrade from cdmaOne to 1x MC CDMA. It leaves companies like MOT and NOK out to dry when they upgrade from analog and cdmaOne to new technologies like MC CDMA.

The introduction of 1X MC CDMA landmarks the introduction of software content to wireless. Hence, the era of personalized network computing has just begun. The tethered era of cords and bulky PC's that sit on your desk while you are out playing has just ended.

We have not even begun to witness the real deployment of resources to wireless computing and communications. Are companies like Palm, Hand, and RIMM going to let the opportunities in CDMA Wirless computing go undeveloped. MSFT & other computer giants are going to deploy more resources now that the R & D time for 1X and HDR have ended.

Wireless can now move beyond the restriction of the handsets. Mobile PC's, planes, trucks, boats, cars, PDA, handsets and every other device can be connected to persoanlized information networks at any time.

IMO, I think the weakness in the stock price today was a function of the big hit that the wireless component companies like Sawtek suffered. The big MOT downgrade by Lehman did not help the group either.

Hi Ruff: Heavy duty comment from Ollila...."I don't think we were quick enough to invest big enough in CDMA". Any thoughts as to where this may be going?????? $$$$$Q*$$$$

Ruffian, what a nice article you found on NOK.

I just wonder how NOK plans to "win". It takes more than deciding to win to actually win at something. My guess is they either plan to get some magical "smarts" and solve their ongoing CDMA ASIC problems, or more likely, get a solid deal with QCOM.

It seems it will just be a matter of time......

Ruffian, "I don't think we were quick enough to invest big enough in CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access)," Ollila continued. "We should have done that earlier, more. Now we have a catch-up game, which we will win. We have decided we will win and we will. But it's a little bad to miss 18 months." Big time post Ruff, well done.
This CEO Ollila seems like an entirely different kettle of sardines than his Ericsson counter-part: a) he didn't claim to have invented CDMA b) he's not above admitting he made a boo-boo and c) he knows CDMA is the key to surviving in the wireless world.
I don't know whether to be scared or exhilirated. Ericcy was a joke--you knew we'd win that one. This guy's no joke. Seems to me the Q would be wise to consider a little JV with the Nokia boys--show them how to build the damned ASICs in house if that's what they need to make a buck and retain prestige. With Vodafone and Lucent behaving themselves so nicely, I think NOK would be just what we need for a hat trick.
10 points, Ruff. Mike Doyle
