Tench - RE: "Speaking of vapor launches, have you noticed how vaporous the AMD Duron is? The only Duron-based systems you can get are the handful being sold on Amazon.com's auction site:"

I think you would prefer Duron to appear vaporous for some time. Have you seen the benchmarks? It completely blows away the Celeron. Duron is a MUCH better low-end processor. Here is Anand's review of Celeron vs. Duron at 700MHz - anandtech.com

There are plenty of Durons available, a bunch of listings on Pricewatch...
I think the problem with major OEMs and the Duron right now is either building and qualifying motherboards and/or the availability of stock motherboards...
There likely aren't even enough for the thunderbirds and I'd say they take priority because of bigger system margins.

OTOH, There are plenty of BX motherboards for the Celeron IIs...so Intel can sell a bunch at 1/3 the price of the coppermines...
I see the introduction of Celeron IIs at 700 as an attempt to hold market share...even at the expense of margin...
They held off as long as they coud to see what Duron was going to be introduced at and matched it...
This has been Intels strategy...

Re: Speaking of vapor launches...

Duron isn't a great launch, but a search for Duron on pricewatch returns 4 pages of responses.

For a real release though, the first decent one in a long time from either company, look at today's K6+ notebook processor launch. Several models on the shelves, in stock, ready for sale at Best Buy the day of the announcement.

There was one beat up looking floor sample PIII 650 notebook, all other Intel PIII and celeron notebooks were at 500 or slower. K6+ notebooks at 533 and 500 in stock, K6 notebooks at 500 and below.

By the way, PIII is now up to 733MHZ (and slower) in retail (at the Best Buy I visited today). The fastest Celeron I saw was 500MHZ.

Athlons were in stock at 800MHZ, 900MHZ, and 1Gigahertz.

The spec sheet for QDI's new socket A motherboard says it supports: AMD Athlon Processors at 750/800/850/900/950MHz ,1GHz, 1.1GHz and future

Somebody seems to think AMD is already shipping 1.1GHZ Athlons.
