July Boating: "Internal Affairs, the true story behind the troubled Ficht technology and OMC's search for a solution". Page 126.

This is a must read for the engine crowd. A detailed description of what was happening and how OMC literally stumbled thru figuring it out. They have nowhere near the resources of Mercury, which we recently found out (again) in France. What they don't discuss is how owners of Ficht motors, even after factory upgrades, can expect essentially zero resale value. Even owners of the new "Ram" version should be wary. OMC actually concedes their own dealers were "refusing to sell Ficht outboards even to customers who wanted them". The article has some other interesting discussions, including that OMC didn't do a lot of testing before dumping Ficht onto the market. And even the new Ram Ficht requires the use of a special detergent rich injection oil to help prevent the horrid carbon buildup that destroys some Ficht motors. Plus the oil injection also has to be fed directly to the cylinder walls on some models. These are "band-aid" solutions. There's also a remark by OMC's chief outboard engineer "I can run a chain saw on Ficht". Yeah, who wants a $1000 chainsaw? And it would be heavy to boot.

July issue of "Boating Industry International" has an article on OMC's woes with a strange comment: "It is our intention to expand FICHT into non-marine applications, and in doing so, to substantially increase the company's profitability," says Martinez. Martinez is OMC's Senior VP of Finance. I need to get Roberta Saling to address this remark in terms of OMC's settlement with OE.

BTW, I really enjoyed the Watercraft article. They hit the nail on the head criticizing Yamaha's CAT approach. Those boats will be dogs compared the their DI peers, especially OCP. I imagine Yamaha will end up using their HPDI on their watercraft.
