Hi Ken,

Hope you enjoyed the Alaska trip. I'm envious.

Mirrors more patient than electronic switches because they do no processing? As I understand it, the processing still has to be done at the edge. Will electronic switches become obsolete except at the edge?

I believe that is the vision of the pure all optical network. However, those mirrors respond to electronic signals. Therefore they do not qualify for the pure optical network.

In the interim, nothing beats electronics for processing data. Pure optical switching will eventually become a reality. It may be as far as five years out. Meanwhile, MEMS, bubble switches, and electronic based optical switches will serve to meet the interim requirements until something better comes along. For something better, check out nanovation.com. Fascinating stuff.

Regards,

Jack Hutchison
