Although I don't know whether I qualify as a "SUNW sultan," let me jump in and say that it seems pretty unlikely to me that C# will result in the end of Java, especially if it's as described -- "a hybrid of C and C++" (which is something of an oxymoron in itself, since I believe C++ is a superset of C; i.e. any hybrid of the two will be a subset of C++).

C# just looks to me like another piece of evidence supporting the DOJ's case.

Better news for you is that they've mapped the human genome. Soon, they will have isolated the IDIOT (idiocy) gene. --- Microsoft already announced this last year, only then they called the language "Cool". This one, C sharp, is structurally identical to D flat. The remarkable thing about this language is none of the letters from the home row of the keyboard are used, like a,s,d,f,g,h,j,k,l, and the semicolon, btw. Not so great for handling strings. --- It's no accidental why this is the absolute LEAST favorite harmonica key. -JCJ

Re: C#=end_of_JAVA

Dale and thread,

This is why I've stated it's important for IBM and Sun to come together with Java. From the 3rd paragragh:

"We're working with ECMA, so there will be a wide range of devices and platforms that will have C# available for them," said Tony Goodhew, Microsoft's Visual C++ product manager

If you all remember, at one time Sun was working with ECMA, but things didn't work out. A company like IBM will never go along with a situation where Sun has the last say in Java. If you're going to base all your software on Java, either you control the standard or a 3rd party does. In no way do you let your main competitor control the standards. If Java fragments like UNIX did, it's the end of it.

Without going into massive processor details, it's safe to say that IBM and Sun have the same goal in their future processors. Both want superior Java performance. This goes against what the other competition is doing. Therefore, I think it's important for both companies to come to terms on this issue. If it can be done, both companies will benefit in the future. If not, we will be leaving the door wide open for IA64 to commoditize the server market.

just my opinion,

chic
