levy, the net is still like a town under construction. Trucks move around with building material, but it's not clear yet how it's gonna look like when finished. Go2net offering some of its sites as 'products' is a move forward. It demonstrates the dual strategy of Go2net: 1. setting up portal and destination sites 2. delivering internet services Authorize.net shows the potential of the service segment. But entering a new market, means as well becoming subject to competition in that market. The internet is maturing. In the initial phase all actors in the field were accomplishing all roles and functions. Now we see that the net becomes segmented. In each segment leaders appear that will start to dominate that segment. Go2net is active in many segments. 'Consumer, business and enabling services'. Sounds great. But what is it's core competitive strength? It may be too much spread out. In theory, games, free business hosting and credit card authorization can share the same software platform. In practice, this platform is not so uniform, reflecting the fact that just a year ago, these were separate companies. Greg Badros, the new chief technology officer might need a year to really integrate the platform. Moreover, in each of the segments Go2net might loose out to a player who is putting more efforts to become the leader. The real competition of Hypermart are not other free business hosting companies, but professional hosting companies expanding services and lowering prices. The Silicon Investor thread technology is one of the best in the market. But what is the strategy to make it the most used global discussion platform? We see several sites offering this type of technology. I think Go2net is in the midst of a strategy review. Is it an internet portal company or an internet application provider? The easy answer is 'both'. The difficult answer is an analysis of the competitive potential of each application and the allocation of resources to transform potential into reality. The relation to Vulcan Ventures is influencing the definition of objectives and allocation of resources. The broadband project might concentrate a large part of management and programming time. How much time is left for the other segments? Again, Silicon Investor. What is the potential? Great. A perfect scalable technology to allow people to share ideas, news and background information. The scope of use is not limited to investing, but can be used for many subject fields, like travel, cooking and art. In december last year SI moved to the new platform. Six months later we see SI technology offered as an private label option. I wished Go2net was more aggressive to obtain a leadership position in the global 'discussion thread market'. Like many of you I am a user of Lotus notes applications within a multinational. I am sure SI technology beats Notes technology. I would love to use SI type of applications to share knowledge within my company. Ultraseek (recently bought by Inktomi) is the most used search engine on corporate intranets (1500 customers). Can't Go2net team up with Ultraseek and offer thread services? We'll see what happens. Regards, Pareto
