This is from the Atlanta paper. Some interesting NBA nostalgia:

NOT A SIXTH SENSE

Players who were chosen No. 6 overall since the 1980 draft, and notable player(s) taken later. The Hawks have the No. 6 pick in Wednesday's draft:

Yr./No. 6 pick/ Team/Later pick/Team/Pos./Comment
'80/Mike O'Koren/Nets/Rick Mahorn/Bullets/35th/O'Koren averaged 8.2 ppg and 3.4 rpg over 6 1/2 seasons.
'81/Orlando Woolridge/Bulls/Tom Chambers/Clippers/8th/Woolridge was a steady scorer but bounced through the league with
seven teams.
Other later picks: Rolando Blackman (Mavericks, 9th); Larry Nance (Suns, 20th)
'82/Trent Tucker/Knicks/Cliff Levingston/Pistons/9th/Tucker averaged double-figure scoring only twice in his career.
'83/Russell Cross/Warriors/Derek Harper/Mavericks/11th/Cross played/less than 8 minutes per game in 45 career games.
Other later picks: Clyde Drexler (Blazers, 14th); Doc Rivers (Hawks, 31st)
'84/Mel Turpin/Bullets/Alvin Robertson/Spurs/7th/Turpin's first two seasons were solid; three years later he was out of the league.
Other/later/picks://Otis/Thorpe/(Kings,/9th);/Kevin/Willis/(Hawks,/11th);/John/Stockton/(Jazz,/16th)
'85/Joe/Kleine/Kings/Chris/Mullin/Warriors/7th/Kleine/never/approached/his/college/statistics/in/an/unspectacular/but/long/career.
Other later picks: Chris Mullin (Warriors, 7th); Detlef Schrempf (Mavericks, 8th); Charles Oakley (Cavaliers, 9th); Karl Malone
(Jazz, 13th); Joe Dumars (Pistons, 18th)
'86/William Bedford/Suns/Ron Harper/Cavaliers/8th/Bedford, a 7-foot center, was promise dismally unfulfilled: averaged 4.1 ppg, 2.4 rpg.
Other later picks: Mark Price (Mavericks, 25th); Dennis Rodman (Pistons, 27th)
'87/Kenny Smith/Kings/Kevin Johnson/Cavaliers/7th/Miller, Johnson, Jackson still playing in 1999-2000 season; Smith was a
television analyst.
Other later picks: Reggie Miller (Pacers, 11th); Mark Jackson (Knicks, 18th)
'88/Hersey Hawkins/Clippers/Dan Majerle/Suns/14th/One time that the No. 6 pick could be said to have been the best available
choice.
Other later picks: Rod Strickland (Knicks, 19th)
'89/Stacey King/Bulls/Tim Hardaway/Warriors/14th/Imagine Hardaway and Michael Jordan in the same backcourt, with Pippen in tow.
Other later picks: Shawn Kemp (Sonics, 17th); Vlade Divac (Lakers, 26th)
'90/Felton Spencer/T'wolves/Elden Campbell/Lakers/27th/Minnesota drafted for need but clearly could have had a better player.
Other later picks: Toni Kukoc (Bulls, 29th)
'91/Doug Smith/Mavericks/Dale Davis/Pacers/13th/Smith had an uneventful career in Dallas, averaging 10.4 ppg in '92-93.
'92/Tom Gugliotta/Bullets/Latrell Sprewell/Warriors/24th/Hard to argue with Gugliotta but many teams missed on Sprewell --- or
did they?
'93/Calbert Cheaney/Bullets/Allan Houston/Pistons/11th/Cheaney continues to be nothing more than a bit player, now with the
Celtics.
'94/Sharone Wright/76ers/Eddie Jones/Lakers/10th/Another draft for need in Wright, whose career ended with an auto accident.
Other later picks: Jalen Rose (Pacers, 13th)
'95/Bryant Reeves/Grizzlies/Michael Finley/Suns/21st/Grizzlies needed a center but could have had a star small forward.
'96/Antoine Walker/Celtics/Kobe Bryant/Hornets/13th/Walker is a solid player but doesn't have Bryant's future --- or an NBA ring.
'97/Ron Mercer/Celtics/Tracy McGrady/Raptors/9th/The jury remains out on Mercer, but McGrady is a burgeoning star.
'98/Robert Traylor/Mavericks/Jason Williams/Kings/7th/Traylor's size was the allure, but/Williams has exhibited star power.
'99/Wally Szczerbiak/T'wolves/Truly was the best player available on the board.

Somehow Portland gets a good player every single year, even though they are drafting in terrible position. I love their choice of Erick Barkley. I also like 3 of the picks at the tail end of the draft: Pete Mickeal, Chris Porter, and Scoonie Penn. I think 2 out of these three will have NBA careers of some sort.

The big winner seems to be Orlando, clearing cap room for not just Grant Hill and Tim Duncan, but now also Tracy McGrady.

I was down on Courtney Alexander, but if Don Nelson drafted him, he has a good shot to be a player. I like Nelson taking Etan Thomas.

Chicago looks to be the big loser. They took Mihm, who looks like just another big slow white guy. They took Fizer, who can only play power forward in the NBA, and Brand has a lock on that position. They took El-Amin, Guyton, and Voskuhl in the second round, none of whom are prospects.
