This place is so quiet it echos. . . echos. . . chos. . . chos. . . . I took a whirlwind trip to LA so wasn't able to watch the market, except for the open. Based on the close, I didn't miss much. (About the same as when I left.) Okay, looking more closely at the expansion news:newsalert.com SDL, Inc. (Nasdaq:SDLI) announced today plans to build two new facilities that will expand its North American operations by 183,000 square feet to meet demand for SDL's Raman amplifier product line and emerging transmitter and receiver products. These additions include a 50,000 square foot facility at its Santa Clara, California campus and a 133,000 square foot facility in Piscataway, New Jersey. These moves follow recent manufacturing facility expansions for semiconductor lasers, lithium niobate modulators, 980 nm pump modules and doped specialty optical fibers. SDL plans to occupy the new facilities and begin production at both sites by the end of the fourth quarter of this year. Reading between the lines: 1) At the annual meeting on May 18, Don Scifres said the Veritech and Santa Clara expansions would take 6 to 9 months and judging by the above announcement, they're safely on the low end of their target. 2) Of far more significance, Don said at the annual meeting that the New Jersey expansion would triple current space, bringing the total to 60,000 sq. ft. Thinking I may have heard wrong, I went back to my notes from the last CC to see if square footage was mentioned:Message 13466314 Sure enough:Expanding Veritech facility in New Jersey, from 18,000 square feet to 60,000 or more. Yesterday's press says they're building a 133,000 square foot facility, in other words doubling their original plans. Instead of a 3X expansion, it's 7X. Veritech's 1999 revs were $22M, with 45% growth y/y. You do the numbers. :) Pat
