It looks like Laos will go to GSM. I don''t know how many of them can afford mobile phones.

Millicom Received Approval in Principle for the License To Provide Nationwide Cellular Telephony in Laos

NEW YORK, LONDON and LUXEMBOURG, June 23 /PRNewswire/ via NewsEdge Corporation -- Millicom International Cellular S.A., (Nasdaq: MICC), the global telecommunications investor, announced today approval in principle of its application for the provision of nationwide cellular telephony in Lao People's Democratic Republic.

The Government of Lao PDR expressed its intent to cooperate with MIC. The license is expected to be granted after the expiration of the protection clause of the existing contractual agreement with existing cellular operator in October 2001.

Laos has a population of 5.4 million and one of the lowest telephony penetrations in the world. The cellular telephony penetration is 0.2% and has grown by 118% during the last 12 months period.
