AOL to use InterTrust security software in Winamp DULLES, Va., June 27 (Reuters) - No. 1 Internet services provider America Online Inc. (NYSE: AOL) said on Tuesday it plans to use InterTrust Technologies Corp.'s (NASDAQ: ITRU) software and services that allow the secure dissemination of media files from the Internet. AOL said its first application under the agreement with InterTrust will be in conjunction with AOL's Winamp music player, which plays popular MP3 files. MP3 is a format that converts music into small packets of digital data that are easy to copy and store. As the distribution of music and other media files over the Internet gains acceptance, the ability to control piracy has taken on paramount importance among many media companies, epitomized by the record industry's battle with several Internet companies accused of infringing copyright law. The concern has given rise to companies like InterTrust specializing in "digital rights management," which is software that can apply customized forms of security to media files. AOL plans to distribute one of InterTrust's products, "InterRights Point," on promotional discs containing AOL's 6.0 version later this year. The deal represents AOL's first partnership with a digital rights management company.
