Careful on PDA mania. . .even the slick new ones with the colorful screens and ability to surf any site on the web. . . have one major drawback. . .they still access the net at under 20k.. . .which as anyone knows is nowhere near acceptable. Sites that are adapted to wireless devices may perform well. . . but don't count on accessing the full array of sites you are currently used to using.

Altern8 happens to have a good usable wireless connection. . but that is not the norm.

And there is worry that many consumers may tire of PDAs' World Wide Wait and lose interest in PDAs and wireless access BEFORE companies like Metricom can spread broadband wireless across the country. . .at speeds upwards of 200k . . which rivals xDSL. Currently, their service is limited to just Silicon Valley and Washington D.C. . . with rollouts planned for San Francisco and Seattle. . . but it will take up to 2 years to get across the country to a decent market size. And there are few others even pursuing broadband wireless. . . so it may be several years of using glorified DayRunners until these devices are usable.

But I'll tell you. . . I am waiting for BlueTooth. .. .a cool name. . .what else do you call a technology that pulls together Nokia and Ericsson? In the 10th century, the King of Denmark, known as "Bluetooth" united the two halves of Denmark.

BlueTooth will enable you to carry a single device that connects via radio frequency with all your other devices. . .cell phones, notebooks, pagers, your car's global positioning device, your portable music player or TV, remote video cameras, home thermostats, your credit cards. . . .and on and on. . . sort of like the MIDI of personal mobility devices. . . which will keep you connected to everything. . . without wires. . .you keep all your devices neatly tucked away in your briefcase or whatever. . . and your BlueTooth device will provide interface via headset microphone and keyboard device. I believe IBM and Motorola are involved as well.

The thing to keep in mind while trading these companies is that most of this stuff . . . while cool to see on TV or at Electronics Shows. . . is still quite far from a nationwide launch. . .perhaps 2 or 3 years from reliable practical use.

Meanwhile, the internet still barely works.

But I still like the cell phone related companies. . . .NOK, ERICY, MOT, QCOM. . . and as I keep saying. . .don't underestimate Sony. . . I believe they will hit this market in a major way over then next year or so.
