The following article is interesting. If I am correct, the DMT approach for VDSL is the way Aware is pushing so that it is backwards compatible with ADSL. I know there is a fight between DMT and CAP/QAM technology for VDSL. I wonder if we will hear from Aware on any new developments in VDSL. semibiznews.com STMicro to buy Telia's patents for modulation technique in VDSL communications Semiconductor Business News (06/27/00, 08:49:42 AM EDT) GENEVA -- In a move to expand its offerings in broadband communications, STMicroelectronics today announced it will acquire full patent rights to Telia Group's discrete multi-tone (DMT) technology for very high bit rate digital subscriber line (VDSL) applications. STMicroelectronics and Sweden's Telia are jointly developing Zipper-DMT VDSL modulation solutions for broadband applications. Under the purchase agreement, the two companies will have the rights to sublicense technology to other companies implementing VDSL, which enables transmission of voice, data and video at speeds up to 60 megabits per second. Details of the agreement were not released. "This technology represents the next step in ST's roadmap to offer advanced solutions for broadband connectivity and at the same time provides backward compatibility with ADSL [asymmetric DSL]," said Aldo Romano, corporate vice president and general manager of STMicroelectronics' Telecommunications and Peripherals/Automotive Groups. STMicro and Telia--a Swedish network operator offering broadband services--are promoting Zipper-DMT as an international standard. The two companies believe DMT modulation techniques will allow full interoperability with ADSL full rate and G.Lite connections. This compatibility will enable ADSL and VDSL to be served as a single mass market, said the two partners. The development partnership has successfully created the technology and Telia has received certification in strategic areas of broadband, said Claes Nycander, CEO at Telia Research AB in Sweden.
