Allen,

In Gilder's May issue he seems to agree with you that intelligence and lots of it, belongs at the edge of the network. To paraphrase:

"The router market will continue to grow but be pushed to the edge of the network. This will cause not the reduction of the market but a huge expansion of it. They will be needed at the edge of the network (in greater numbers) to handle the very flood of optical data that is driving them out of the core of the network"

Regards
JC.

PS. Good article on Cisco/Cerent.

Allen,

Thank you for following up on my question.

I had deduced that given the nature of packet switching, there would be an on-going need for intelligence in the form of software ... and I was hoping that WIND was going to be meeting that need and always be where the 'rubber meets the road' so as to speak :)

Consider your IOU - (much more than) "Paid in Full"

Allen, Your referenced post is getting a lot of well deserved attention. I found it on Frank Coluccio's thread, and on the SI and Yahoo Ciena threads as well.

I happen to agree with your thoughts on optical switching and have posted similar commentary, although not nearly as eloquently as you have. A fantastic job. Congratulations and thanks.

Jack Hutchison

PS: Optical networking grossly overshadows semiconductor growth (Moore's Law), but the prospects for edge access make make even this phenomenon pale. Especially when 10 G Ethernet comes alive.

Allen Benn,

on an earlier thread, you mentioned you were planning an analysis and commentary re: the Linux "threat" or why it was not actually a threat. Allen, will you debunk these marketing ploys (below) for us - and just what Linux really is, in terms of it's influence on our WIND investments? These two new URLs have recently popped up:

psos2linux.org
vxworks2linux.org
