6/26/00 - Brazil: Battle to win contracts to PCS services

Alcatel, Siemens, Nokia, Ericsson, Lucent, Motorola, and Nortel are already negotiating with the future
C band cellular operators to begin to sell the GSM cellular phones in Brazil. The PCS
(PersonalCommunications System) cellular service exploitation grants will be auctioned in the end of
the year, and will adopt the GSM system, with frequency of 1.8Ghz. Siemens already signed contract
with prospect bidders, to furnish the telephones. The company will invest US$50mil in Brazil, to create
two new industrial lines. Only in the Curitiba's plant, US$10mil will be invested. The other US$40mil
will be invested in the Manaus's plant, that already produces analogical equipment. Alcatel also may
invest US$50mil to produce the GSM telephone in Brazil.
