I think they are not good "investments" right now -- perhaps a good short term trade if you think a rebound for the market is in order?

We've had a real long expansion -- anyone (commercial or individual) can get a loan. One whiff of economic trouble and the stocks will be hit hard -- even if the PEs are "low relative to the market" -- I would buy them after a few prominent ones announce real troubles and Greenspan's successor is called on to save them.

Many of them are, of course, too big to fail. That's why I would buy them if real turmoil and darkness set in ...

I know a fellow who bought a bunch of them when desert storm was in progress -- that was a good buy ...
