the travelling young* who work a few months at some bartender or waiter or like job, save up a little cash, and then wander, extending their money as long as possible in order to experience more fully the cultures with which they are in contact

We get droves of them here, mostly pretty decent folks. They actually have a pretty significant economic impact: they spend less per capita than the well-heeled tourists that tourism authorities want to attract, but they spend it in small family-owned businesses, which in turn hire locals, buy their supplies locally, etc. It's also true that they have a lot more contact with the locals, and that they don't just experience the locals - the locals also experience them, and they leave behind ideas, books, music, etc. There is a real impact.

I suspect that a few thousand backpackers travelling about Cuba and interacting with the locals would do more to subvert Castro's power than an equivalent number of beady-eyed spooks and Miami would-be guerrillas.

Are people still claiming that Cuba is a threat to American security? How on earth do they justify that?

At my age I like SOME creature comforts, but I think a B & B is a great way to vacation. You meet the locals and it's very laid back and relaxed - no dressing up for dinner. I dislike package tours myself. I bet if US citizens were allowed to visit Cuba freely and the economy was less restricted B&B's would pop up all over the place.
