Flemings launches life sciences fund after Genome

By Caroline Brothers

PARIS, June 27 (Reuters) - Global fund managers Fleming Asset Management on Tuesday launched six new investment funds, including one devoted to life sciences, a day after scientists published the map of the human genome.

The Fleming Global Life Sciences Fund is designed to give investors with $5,000 or more to spend exposure to the revolution that is shaking up the global drug and healthcare industry due to new technology and breakthroughs like the mapping of the human genetic plan.

"This is not your grandfather's healthcare fund," John Regan, senior analyst for the open-ended, dollar-based investment vehicle, told reporters at a news conference in Paris.

"We are going to make money by identifying companies that speed up drug development from 10 years to five years or three. Those leaders will provide fantastic investment opportunities in the coming years."

With $120 billion under management worldwide, Flemings Asset Management -- whose parent Robert Fleming is about to merge with U.S. bank Chase Manhattan -- manages $14 billion from its Luxembourg base alone, said Colette Bowe, chairman of Fleming Fund Management.

The six new funds will join the 32 that already exist under the Luxembourg umbrella, she said.

NO ROOM FOR "ONE-MOLECULE WONDERS"

With an investment strategy that shuns pure biotechnology plays and "one-molecule wonders", the life sciences fund plans to identify those companies that can provide the infrastructure for the healthcare revolution.

"We will take bets on which ones will make it through the pipeline," Regan said, adding that 500-600 companies were within its investment sights.

The large pharmaceutical players, facing expiring patents, 10 to 12 year delays before bringing a drug to market and development costs that average $500 million per drug, were not necessarily the best placed to take advantage of the big investment flows, he added.

Flemings said technological developments, including massive data processing capabilities and the automation of clinical research, will speed up the early steps in drug discovery.

Regan cited demographics, including estimates that 20 percent of the world's population will be aged over 65 in 2020, as feeding worldwide demand for drugs and healthcare.

Meanwhile, the human genome map also had profound implications. While all the drugs currently on the world's markets are targeted at 500-600 genes, the genome project has identified 200,000.

PROVIDING PICK AXES FOR THE GOLD PROSPECTORS

"We've just identified them; now we've got to work out what they do," Regan said. "That will be a big investment with big returns."

The other five funds launched on Tuesday include a Pacific Technology Fund that will take stakes in the Asian companies to which the world's biggest Internet, mobile telephony and data communications groups outsource their production.

"It's a gold-rush phenomenon -- we think providing pick-axes and hats for the prospectors is the best way to make money, given that it is harder to pick who is going to win among the start-ups," Richard Cardiff, European business director at the asset manager's Jardine Fleming unit, told the news conference.

Flemings is also launching two funds that aim to tap new growth trends in an economy so as to give the investor long term returns despite interim volatility.

It also announced the creation of a German Opportunites Fund and a Smaller Companies Fund

not sure which conf. you're referring to. i listened to analyst paul knight from thos. weisel on radio wall street. his specialty is the tool cos. and his favorite appears to be PEB (which i also like) but he also said some very positive things about CRA.

said they have $1b cash and leading tech. talent to purssue their strategy. said there would now be a significant barrier of entry for others coming in this area because of the technology cost and their lead. he said significant revenues would start coming in q3 and q4 from dbase licensing and he said they have the potential to "accelerate dramatically" he definitely identified CRA as the leader in this area ahead of INCY, HGSI and MYGN. FWIW.
