Paul Kantner Sued by Jefferson Airplane

Jefferson Airplane Inc. is suing founding member Paul Kantner for allegedly performing under the band's name without permission. Kantner has been touring with Slick Aguilar, Chris Smith, Diana Mangano and fellow founding member Marty Balin and performing Jefferson Airplane's 1969 album Volunteers in its entirety. In 1985, Kantner left Jefferson Airplane and signed an agreement stating that he would not use the words "Jefferson" or "Airplane" for commercial use without the permission of Jack Cassidy, Grace Slick, Jorma Kaukonen and manager Bill Thompson, the other shareholders of the band?s corporate name. "I'd rather have a root canal than to sue somebody we're partners with," says Thompson. "Jefferson Airplane is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and people are going to these shows expecting to see Grace Slick sing and there's some other girl singer.
It's a fraud. We want to stop it."
