Not at all. Officially, during Baltimore optical conference(few moths ago) ALA executive was interview and he first made such remark.biz.yahoo.com ALA management seem to be conservative , so I think they may already nailed design wins and now are working details of future network ( I am not talking about price negotiation, but rather technical details). After each design win, comes period of tests, specification required by customer etc., before real contract with numbers in signed. As far as broadband access platforms like ALA DSLAM , LMDS or NN 350 access platform margins as, as you said , are lower , however volume is typically ( within specific network) 3-5 times higher hen core/edge!. In ALA/NN case they are going with 12.8 gig 36170 ATM switch and new 50 gig ATM/IP/MPLS switch /router( later this year 450 gig) + 40620 network manager+ Alcatel DALSMs. Entire offering in manage by 40620 , and the fit is almost perfect. NN/ALA also offer 350 access node the same for xDSL and LMDS+ the same software. Now, many carrier, specially in US ( SBC is doing this already) have much compelling reason to by former NN products. Also Newbridge-Alcatel is the only company selling commercially xDSL which include TV channels and video- technology lunch by NN on SuperCom 1999. (customers: Kingstom Comm, ATT Canada, New Edge in US and Eircom PLC);Message 126708450 Eircom was announced in Europe , and the rest were officially announced in US and all are more then 200 million $, per press release or Bloomberg news) NT spent about 1 billion to buy Promatory and nobody saw any significant contract from them yet. I am sure NT will deliver , but in multimedia( TV,voice, video, etc.) over copper wire NN(ALA) is well ahead of competition, and this part of access platform have potentially much higher margin then just simple ADSL for multiaccess to internet only. During Telecom in Geneva(fall 1999) it was difficult to get to Newbridge bootb/c of 3DSL presentation. New FCC rules ( last fall ) initiated very heavy investment period for ROBC into ATM-xDSL and 6 bilion Pronto Project was just presented shortly after FCC amde correcdtion to Telecom act: ?Looking at New Age Access ATM may be in your future:? networkmagazine.com Zbyslaw
