>>It is very possible that a large European TELCO could acquire Sprint PCS.<<

Eric, there was an article in friday's Washington post in which Deutsche Telecom expressed an interest in Sprint.
See washingtonpost.com

I agree with you that it would be too costly to turn Sprint PCS into a GSM network and there would be no good business reason to do so.

RE: DOJ action against Sprint merger with WCOM. Even if the DOJ allowed the merger, the Europeans would not stand for it because the two companies would dominate areas such as Internet access. Frankly, I don't see what the issue is, as far as the future of CDMA goes. Sprint already has a nationwide CDMA network and continues to expand that network. Regardless of who ends up owning Sprint, the PCS network will continue to grow. At present, WCOM offers wired long distance connections to various cellular users, making cellular networks less expensive than they would otherwise be without some land lines.

I see no particular advantage of Sprint being tied to WCOM or for that matter, to any other firm. Let them specialize in PCS. The lack of a single company combining all the functions and territories does not mean no more profits. I would appreciate someone trying to explain why the proposed merger would make a significant difference in Sprint profits.
