IN regard to SNDK,

Is it worthy to discuss the cost associated w/ constructing and reconstructing the fab facilities? Buffett stays away from companies such as telecom, airlines, and car makers due to the enormous capital required to change models, buy planes, maintain service, etc...

Buffett is not a Gorilla Gamer, however he is someone many here have learned from and admire.

Two tornado's? Try four potentially..MP3, PDA's, QCOM cell phones(and soon others), and DC's...Yes, it is essentially photos and music, but the initial crossovers between multiple devices is significant. Also, it will create significant barriers to entry for any future competitor. The more devices SNDK becomes the standard for, the more difficult they will be to displace.

The only question is will SNDK supply the essential "form factors". That, and the "other" question...potential settlement of pending lawsuits...

Four beers and poor grammar on a tough thread..Be kind to a guy who never prepared a report on GLW..(which is up 100 points since I improperly mentioned it here...not lazy, just busy running a business...)

Respectfully,

Jason W

NOTE: long SNDK, GLW...happy to lurk and read 99% of the time..

Mike: The major reason I see the Sandisk "form factor" as a likely winner in wireless removable storage (and possibly functions for communication with banks, etc.) is the same that I see for "smart cards".

Actually, as I have discussed with Eric L on his smart card thread, I am still trying to learn what role smart cards can play and how extensive their function. The smart card is the sine qua non for wireless handhelds in the future - when 3rd gen is in full swing. Then the question is will there also be a slot and a role for Sandisk's "removable storage" - i.e. two slots or one - or two widgets using the same slot for different purposes?

This is very much open IMO. But Eric L is the expert in this and would hope he will add his wisdom.

In trying to answer your question directly, the evidence is coming in that Palm and Qualcomm (and soon others) are turning to flash as a tool. Does this mean Sandisk, I would suggest that the odds are good, since Sandisk's "form factor" is becoming pervasive in photography and music, it has a lead, a market and "mind space".

Size and solidity are important, but not sufficient IMO.

All of this is speculation far in advance of any way to meet the careful standards you set, so it is only grist for the mill, nada mas.

Best as always.
