The Guardian/ DoCoMo builds pounds 6bn war chest
[European Intelligence Wire]

Extracts from article:

NTT DoCoMo, the mobile
phone division of Japan's largest company, is building a war chest for further
expansion in Europe. Executives have confirmed that the group was considering
a share issue that could raise pounds 6.5bn.

Kiyoyuki Tsujimura, managing director of NTT DoCoMo's global business operations, said the company wanted to expand its popular mobile internet business around the world - but he declined to say how much capital it would raise.

...............[snip].............[snip]..........

DoCoMo's decision to build a string of shareholdings in many global mobile companies may be part of its strategy to promote a technology known as wideband code division multiple access.

If this is adopted as the global standard for third generation mobile phone networks, it will enable DoCoMo's I-mode service - which provides internet access on mobile phones - to operate internationally on other companies' third generation networks.

I-mode is considered by many specialists to be a more advanced internet mobile service than the Wireless Application Protocol and General Packet Radio Service systems which allow internet on wireless handsets in Europe.
